15 Unbundled Fares to Choose From

If you’re a Delta loyalist, you’ve likely noticed the airline go through several brand transformations over the past few years. Between the 2024 refresh and the 2026 enhancements to the SkyMiles credit card lineup, the opening of Delta One lounges, and a variety of new — and removed — airline partnerships, it’s been a lot to keep up with.

In 2025, Delta rebranded the terminology surrounding fare classes. What was previously “Comfort+” became Delta Comfort, and the list goes on. In October 2025, Delta unveiled 11 travel experiences that changed how you purchase tickets. And in July 2026, that unbundled fare structure officially reached premium cabins. Here’s what to know.

What to Know About Delta Travel Experiences

When you search for a Delta flight, you’ll see unbundled fares. According to Delta, these options offer additional flexibility and personalization, so there’s something for everyone. When you perform a search on the Delta website or through the app, you’ll still see the same fare classes as usual:

• Delta Main
• Delta Comfort
• Delta First
• Delta Premium Select
• Delta One

Note that some fare classes are only available on select routes.

Travel Experiences come into play when you select a fare class. You can choose between Basic, Classic, and Extra fares.

• Basic: This option offers limited flexibility and benefits. Think of it as a basic economy ticket, regardless of which cabin you’re flying in.
• Classic: The standard fare, which includes seat selection, standard mileage accrual, eCredits for cancellations, and same-day standby.
• Extra: The most expensive option includes additional miles per dollar, a refund to the original form of payment, and same-day confirmed changes.

When this first launched, only Delta Main offered a basic experience. Later in the year, it expanded to Delta Comfort, and now passengers will be able to select a basic experience on First, Premium Select, and Delta One tickets. In total, you now have 15 different experiences to choose from for your next flight.

Delta’s website and app can be quite misleading when you search for a flight. If you perform a search and forget to uncheck the “Include basic” box, the displayed results will show basic fares. You’ll think you’re getting a great deal on your flight, when in reality, a Classic experience costs far more.

Keep in mind that the basic experience is essentially a basic economy ticket, regardless of which cabin you’re actually flying in. When flying on a Basic Business fare, you’ll need to accept the following restrictions:

• Seats assigned after check-in
• Reduced checked bag allowance
• Lower mileage earn
• No complimentary or paid upgrades
• No same-day confirmed or same-day standby travel changes
• Changes or cancellations for a fee

That’s right — you can spend thousands of dollars on a business class seat halfway across the world and not have any on-the-ground amenities. Luckily, passengers flying on a Basic Business ticket will still be able to access lounges through January 18, 2027. After that date, you’ll need to use another entry method if you wish to relax before your flight. Basic Business passengers still receive Zone 1 boarding.

Overall, this is slightly better than the restrictions that come with Main Basic — including Zone 8 boarding and the inability to earn any miles.

According to Delta, Delta First Basic is available and flying in select domestic and Latin markets beginning July 8, 2026. Premium Select Basic and Basic Business are available for purchase in domestic and long-haul international markets starting July 8, with service beginning in September 2026. That said, at the time of writing, we couldn’t find any examples of Basic Business, First Basic, or Premium Select Basic fares, so we can’t predict the price difference.

Although Delta markets this development as a way to book a premium ticket for less, it won’t be surprising if this is a way to hike prices across the board. If a Delta One Classic ticket currently costs $3,000, will it soon cost $3,300 so the Basic Business ticket can fill the $3,000 slot and provide fewer benefits? Only time will tell.

Differences Between Delta Classic and Extra Tickets

Assuming you don’t want a basic economy ticket, you have two travel experiences for each fare class: Classic and Extra. Is the difference enough to justify spending more money?

If you book an Extra ticket, you’ll earn an additional two miles per dollar over a Classic ticket. So, you’ll earn at the following rates when booking an Extra ticket, regardless of fare class:

• General SkyMiles Member: 7 miles per dollar
• Silver Medallion: 9 miles per dollar
• Gold Medallion: 10 miles per dollar
• Platinum Medallion: 11 miles per dollar
• Diamond Medallion: 13 miles per dollar

Booking an Extra ticket allows you to cancel for a refund to your original form of payment, while a Classic ticket receives an eCredit. If you’re a Medallion member, you’ll receive enhanced upgrade priority with an Extra ticket. A Main Extra ticket also gives Zone 5 boarding, while a Main Classic ticket boards in Zone 6 or 7. All other fare classes follow the standard Delta boarding order, regardless of whether a Classic or Extra ticket is booked.

But is it worth it?

The price difference between a Classic and an Extra ticket can be pretty substantial. For instance, a Main Classic ticket from Atlanta (ATL) to Cape Town (CPT) costs $1,889 one-way. The Main Extra ticket costs $2,139, or an additional $250. You’ll have to determine for yourself whether it’s worth paying an extra $250 just to receive bonus miles and a better cancellation policy.

An important caveat — you cannot book an Extra ticket when booking an award redemption. This makes sense because the only real benefits of this fare are associated with cash. On routes where an Extra option isn’t available, a refundable ticket will be offered.

Final Thoughts

Delta’s Travel Experiences are just unbundled fares that are unnecessarily confusing and offer little value to travelers. Essentially, Delta is charging more for an Extra ticket by making it refundable to the original form of payment and slightly increasing mileage earnings. If you’re willing to pay hundreds of dollars more for a refundable ticket, then this is great news. Otherwise, book a classic ticket because your in-flight experience will be the same, at least for now.

And now, you will have the option to book basic tickets in Delta’s most premium cabins. This comes not long after United introduced unbundled fares for its Polaris product, and represents a disappointing change in the aviation industry. If you don’t care about lounge access, seat selection, same-day changes, or the ability to cancel without a fee, then a First Basic or Basic Business ticket might not be unappealing. However, considering airfare is astronomically high to begin with, spending so much for so few benefits is disappointing.
