Repeated Delays at Hyatt Regency Rome Central Leave Travelers Scrambling — Again

The Hyatt Regency Rome Central just pushed its opening date back again to December 1, 2026. While a delayed hotel opening is hardly news, this one is different.

It was originally set to open in the fall of 2025. Since then, it’s seen delay after delay, but guests with bookings aren’t being notified until weeks before their anticipated arrival — leaving many without a hotel in a notoriously expensive city.

I had a reservation at the Hyatt Regency Rome Central for August 2026, so I’ve been inside the drama for several months at this point. I’ll tell you what’s been happening and what you should do if you have an upcoming reservation.

What’s Happening at the Hyatt Regency Rome Central?

The Hyatt Regency Rome Central was originally scheduled to open in the fall of 2025. The opening has been pushed back more than a half dozen times, and it’s now projected to open on December 1, 2026.

According to numerous threads on Reddit (and my own experience), the hotel is waiting to notify guests that their reservation can’t be honored until just weeks (sometimes days) before their arrival.

To make matters worse, the hotel is still accepting reservations. At some point, the responsible thing to do would be to hold off until you know for sure the property will be operational. Instead, Hyatt is choosing to continue to accept bookings, which will almost certainly result in more cancellations.

My Experience With the Hyatt Regency Rome Central

I had a reservation for the Hyatt Regency Rome Central for August 15. By mid-April, I had stumbled upon various Reddit threads discussing the hotel’s problems. When I checked, the Hyatt website listed an opening date of September 1, 2026 — 2 weeks after my planned stay.

On July 1, I received an email that said the hotel wouldn’t be open in time for my reservation and that I had until July 8 to cancel or rebook for a later date. However, the next sentence stated that my reservation was already canceled.

If you’re keeping track, by mid-April 2026, the opening date of the Hyatt Regency Rome Central had been pushed back to September 1, 2026. However, the hotel waited almost 2 months, until July 1, to notify me that my August 15 reservation wouldn’t be honored.

There was no mention of any compensation; however, I asked to be rebooked at a comparable hotel.

On July 10, I received another email stating that I could be accommodated at the Hilton Garden Inn Rome Colosseum.

Whether or not you think a Hilton Garden Inn is comparable to a brand new Hyatt Regency with a pool and Hyatt Club access is irrelevant (it’s not, for the record). The problem is that the hotel is waiting until the last minute to notify customers of the issue, not proactively offering compensation, and exacerbating the problem by continuing to accept reservations.

Bottom Line:

The Hyatt Regency Rome Central was originally scheduled to open in late 2025, and now the anticipated opening date is December 1, 2026. Guests aren’t being notified in a timely manner, and compensation is only being offered upon request.

What Should You Do if You Have a Reservation?

The first thing you should do if you have a reservation for the Hyatt Regency Rome Central anytime in 2026 (and even in early 2027) is book a fully refundable backup hotel. There’s another Hyatt in Rome, The Tribune, which could be a good option, especially if you want to book with World of Hyatt points.

Then, I’d suggest maintaining your reservation until you get an email from Hyatt. From that point, you can request to be rebooked at an alternate hotel at Hyatt’s expense. If you find the rebooking offer acceptable, you should get a relatively free hotel stay (minus some hassle and time spent emailing Hyatt). Keep in mind that if you have Hyatt elite status, those benefits will not be transferred to your new reservation.

Hot Tip:

Don’t book the Thompson Rome as a replacement option, as it’s having its own issues. Reservations opened last year for stays beginning June 1, 2026, but as of July 10, the hotel’s expected opening date has been pushed back to October 10, 2026.

Final Thoughts

The Hyatt Regency Rome Central was originally scheduled to debut by the end of 2025, but the new expected opening date is December 1, 2026. However, this date has been pushed back so many times, I have no confidence that date will stick.

If you have a booking at this hotel, be sure to make a refundable backup reservation and then wait until you receive your cancellation email to request compensation.
