Almost Free Mint Mobile Service

Certain stuff gets more expensive.  Perhaps you’ve noticed.  But other products and services have become cheaper, especially for many who merely pay attention and act accordingly.  Points and travel hobbyists can take this to the next level, where we can come close to zeroing out costs for particular goods and services.  I’ve done this with our wireless service costs for over four years.  Actually, our overall free Mint Mobile service play has improved.

Resetting our Free Mobile Service Play

I started my free mobile service endeavor in early 2022, hitting my stride a few months later.  You can check out those articles for the full details, but here are the steps I’ve used for almost free mobile service:

1. Obtain Mint Mobile service
2. Load my Mint Mobile wallet via Amex Business Platinum in $10 increments on a monthly basis, with a $0.50 recovery fee for each transaction
3. Receive a $10 credit on each of the above transactions through the Business Platinum’s wireless benefit
4. Pay for a 12-month plan/renewal using wallet funds

I’ve historically held enough Amex Business Platinum accounts to substantially add to wallet balances and entirely cover our 12-month plans.  Taking into account the recovery fee charges, this effectively works out to an approximate 95% discount on our mobile service.

How Our Free Mobile Service Play Has Improved

Subsequent to our initial promo periods, we’ve annually reupped with Mint Mobile with 12-month plans at $180 for data and service.  Our first 12-month plans back in 2022 capped data at 4GB monthly.  That’s certainly not enough for many consumers, but it’s always been more than plenty for my wife and me.  We were previously content with 1GB monthly from Republic Wireless, so 4GB felt like a ton.

In April 2023, Mint Mobile raised the cap to 5GB of monthly data for our same plan without raising the price.  Plus, last month, Mint Mobile provided another increase to 6GB of monthly data for our existing plan.  Still, there’s been no price increase.  And the service has been as simple as ever to navigate in our experience, as we’ve periodically replaced unlocked phones.

Over the past few months, I’ve received texts from Mint Mobile about the end of my 12-month plan and how it’s time to renew.  I put off renewing, as I’ve generally done in previous years, to see if Mint would offer any discounts or promos as my plan expiration approached.  Nothing popped up in past years, but 2026 has been different.  After a few text reminders, Mint sent another one targeting me for 20% off my 12-month plan.  That came to $36 off my $180 cost for renewing the plan.  I happily applied my existing wallet balance for this $144 payment.  Taking into account this discount and the above play, my out-of-pocket expense was approximately $7.20 for this next 12 months of wireless service.  More importantly, I have $36 more Mint Mobile Wallet balance available for reupping in 2027.

Conclusion

Of course, existing and prospective Mint Mobile subscribers should look to leverage all discounts and promos, including this one.  Keep your eyes out, but be warned that this one isn’t necessarily available to all.   For instance, while I’ve been targeted, my wife, who has a plan end date close to mine, has not.

Also, keep in mind that the play I described in this and previous articles is just one option for leveraging discounts and credit card benefits to lower your phone bills.  I’m routinely impressed how creative others have been in reducing their mobile service costs.
